New Academic Building
Western New England College
The new Academic Building at Western New England College includes program space for the new School of Pharmacy, new science laboratories and classrooms to replace existing labs in other buildings on campus and specialized classroom spaces for large group presentations. With entry points facing Wilbraham Road and the center of campus, the four story building encompasses 126,000 s.f. of new space. In addition to pharmacy, the building provides space for the college’s programs in biology, chemistry, physics and psychology. Relating to the School of Pharmacy, the building also houses the college’s Health Services facilities.
The exterior materials include brick, large scale precast concrete, glass and aluminum. Together with visible roofing materials these choices offer color and texture to complement existing building materials and forms to reinforce the positive relationship of the campus architecture. A portion of contrasting masonry at the front entrance serves as the background for the primary building signage. Many green building elements have been integrated into the project, including re-cycled content building materials, doors and cabinetry manufactured using Forest Stewardship Council certified wood materials, low VOC paints and adhesives and a high performance thermal envelope. The building will utilize a chilled beam HVAC system, high efficiency boilers and chillers, low flow plumbing fixtures and dual ballast light fixtures.
The interior circulation centers around an open atrium space in the center of the building which connects all floors and defined social spaces for relaxed study activities. Natural light is brought into the center of the structure through this atrium which opens the floor plan for better orientation and sense of place in the building.
