Western New England College
The Southwood Residence Hall is a new four (4) story structure located in the Southeast portion of the Western New England College campus. The 56,900 s.f. structure includes 16 four bedroom suites, 18 double two bedroom suites and 4 double two bedroom accessible suites. The masonry structure with concrete plank floors includes an office, conference space and common room at the first floor and a lower partial floor containing the mechanical, laundry and student storage spaces.
The new residence building expands the suite style living options that are available to the students and complements the adjacent Evergreen Townhouse Residences.
Environmentally responsive design elements include: Low and no VOC paints and adhesives, rubber tile flooring, building materials from local source, plantation grown hardwood cabinets, stone counter tops, low flow plumbing fixtures, motion sensitive lighting controls and solar assisted domestic water heating systems.
Solar panels and geothermal wells improve the operating cost effectiveness of the systems designed into the building. A stormwater recovery system saves rainwater for use in lawn irrigation.
The project also included upgrades to athletic fields, parking areas and the extension of access to the Southeast portion of the campus.
